Blessed and Happy State of Those Who Keep the Commandments of God - 31 August 2021
I work as a Korean instructor for missionaries of our Church who will go to Korea. All of them are absolutely wonderful people filled with love and a desire to serve and they bring great joy into my life! This morning, as I pondered on why some missionaries tend to struggle more than others with Korean, the Spirit helped me recognize a principle related to seeking out and applying counsel that I want to apply more fully in my own life.
I often send out suggestions, resources and instructions that are intended to help them progress. My instructions and help are not perfect and I have much to do to improve as a teacher. But I believe that some missionaries have missed principles that could have helped them because they didn’t fully read or understand my suggestions, forgot about them, or got busy and other things in their lives got in the way of their applying or fulfilling them. This brings me disappointment because I have noticed that when missionaries tell me that they have usually progressed and found joy in applying and practicing according to my suggestions.
As I thought about this, I reflected on my own relationship with God. God has given each of us the scriptures, the words of living prophets and apostles, and personal promptings to help us progress and become the type of people we want to become. Yet sometimes I don't study or seek out these instructions as diligently as I should. Sometimes when I do learn His instructions, I fail to record them or set goals to act upon them. And sometimes I let things that really aren't too important get in the way of living according to God's commandments for me. Reflecting on my own experience and frustration as a commandment-giver in the classroom helped me understand more fully why God gives us commandments and wants us to live them so badly--they are his best advice for us to grow in the ways we need to grow and become the people we want to become!
I know that if we will eagerly seek out, retain in remembrance, and keep the Lord's commandments for us with all of our might, mind and strength (D&C 11:20), our lives will follow the best trajectory possible and we will prosper!
