A Debt We Couldn't Pay - 7 June 2022

Today, I, while in a rush, made a rash move. As I hurried to get some water boiling for noodles, I yanked on a pan that bumped a lid that collided with my roommate's blender jar and sent it falling forward to shatter on the ground. I was mortified, but there was absolutely nothing I could do. There was no way for me to fix it by putting the pieces of glass back together.
That's what I love about Christ and His INFINITE Atonement. Our Redeemer not only has the power to forgive sins but also the power to make things right. We all make mistakes in life that end up hurting others, whether that harm is direct or indirect, physical or emotional. If all Christ offered was just a "Get out of Jail Free" card, we could never be at peace. We would still be left with the guilt of knowing how our actions have negatively affected others, and how there is nothing we can do to ever cancel that pain.
Fortunately, Christ has taken upon Himself "the pains and the sicknesses of his people" (Alma 7:11). He offers not only forgiveness to us, but hope that "all that is unfair about life can be made right"--not just for ourselves but for those whom we have harmed. When we truly repent, our guilt can be completely swept away as we remember that Christ can consecrate any afflictions we have inflicted upon others to their gain.
As I contemplate the cost of my carelessness today, I am grateful that Christ paid an infinite price so that He truly can "right the unrightable" in every one of our lives. Truly, He is risen with healing in his wings--power to heal both us and those we may have wronged.
"He came to pay a debt that He didn't owe because we owed a debt we couldn't pay." - President Russell M. Nelson
